Your own expired stories live in your private Stories Archive — automatic, unless you switched it off. Anyone's highlights are their deliberately-kept old stories, visible on their profile. But a story that expired and was never archived or highlighted is gone — no tool recovers it.
"Old stories" means two different things depending on whose they are. Here's how to track down each.
Your own old stories
By default, Instagram tucks every expired story into a private archive only you can see: Profile → menu → Archive → Stories Archive. Scroll back through everything you've posted. From there you can re-share one or pin it to a highlight. If your archive is empty, auto-save was off — nothing before that point exists.
Someone else's old stories = highlights
You can't see another person's story archive — it's private. What you can see is what they chose to keep as highlights on their profile. Those are their old stories, curated and public (on public accounts). Watch them anonymously with a highlights viewer — and since older highlights carry no viewer list, browsing them is already low-trace.

What's gone for good
A story that expired after 24 hours without being archived or highlighted is unrecoverable. No app, viewer or "story recovery" tool can bring it back — anyone claiming otherwise is running a scam.
