A site dangles free views or downloads, then throws up a "Log in with Instagram" box that copies the real one. The instant you type your credentials, you've handed a stranger the keys to your account — followers, DMs, recovery email, the lot.

Why a real viewer never asks

Public stories, reels and posts need no authentication to read — that's the definition of "public." A tool that fetches them through its own servers has no technical reason to want your password. So when a site asks regardless, the login form isn't loading anything. It's there to grab what you type and ship it to whoever runs the site.

What actually happens when you log in

The credentials land with the attacker, not with Instagram. From there it's the familiar playbook: your account blasts spam, DMs your followers the same scam link, swaps its recovery email so you can't get back in, or gets sold on.
