Unsending removes the message from both inboxes and leaves no placeholder behind — Instagram does not tell the other person that something was deleted. What it cannot undo is a push notification they already received, a preview they already read, or a screenshot.
"Unsend" is genuinely a delete for both sides, which makes it stronger than most people expect. The gap is timing, not mechanics.
How do you unsend a message?
Long-press the message in the chat and choose Unsend. It disappears from your thread and from theirs, whether or not they opened it. There is no time limit — a message from two years ago can be unsent today.
What does the other person see?
Nothing, if they had not looked. The message is simply gone, with no "this message was deleted" line where it used to be. Someone reading the thread afterwards has no way to tell that it ever contained anything. That is the key difference from apps that leave a tombstone.

Does the notification give it away?
Often, yes. Instagram pushes the message text to their phone the moment you send it. Unsending 10 seconds later removes the message but not the banner already sitting on their lock screen, and not their memory of reading it. Speed helps only against people who have not looked yet.
Can you unsend after they read it?

How do you know whether they saw it first?
Check the thread before you unsend, not after. A "Seen" marker with a timestamp under the message is definitive: it was opened. No marker is weaker evidence — it rules out them opening the chat, but not them reading the push notification, which is where most messages are actually read. Two more signals help: their activity status at the moment you sent it, and whether the message went to their inbox or to Requests, since a request sits unopened far longer. If the message went to Requests and shows no Seen marker within a minute, an unsend is close to clean.
Unsend, vanish mode or view-once?
Unsend is retroactive and silent. Vanish mode deletes automatically when the chat is closed, but notifies on screenshots — see what vanish mode is. View-once media reports both opens and replays. If your goal is that nothing lingers, vanish mode is the deliberate choice; unsend is the repair tool.
