Open Settings → Story, tap "Hide story from", and tick the accounts. They stay followers, get no notification, and simply stop seeing your story ring. The setting is permanent until you undo it, and it applies to every future story.
This is the quietest tool Instagram gives you. It solves the common problem — one specific person you would rather not post for — without unfollowing, blocking or going private.
How do you hide a story from someone?
- Open your profile and go to Settings and privacy.
- Tap Story, then Hide story from.
- Tick every account you want excluded, then confirm.
You can also do it mid-story: while a story of yours is live, open the viewer list, tap the three dots next to a name and choose Hide story from them. That removes the current story from their view too, not only future ones.
Will they know they were hidden?
No. Instagram sends nothing, your follower count does not change, and your profile still shows your posts to them. What changes on their side is subtle: your story ring stops appearing. Someone who watched your stories daily may notice the silence, but nothing in the app confirms it.

Where does hiding leak?
- Reshares. If a mutual friend reposts your story to theirs, the hidden person can see it there.
- Highlights. A hidden viewer is excluded from highlights too, but only while the hide is active — unhide them and old highlights become visible again.
- Tags and mentions. Tagging someone in a story you hid from a third person still shows it to that tagged account's own followers if they reshare.

If the list of people you want excluded is longer than the list you want included, switch to Close Friends instead.
How do you undo it?
The same screen. Untick the account and your stories reach them again from the next post onward — and, as above, your existing highlights reappear for them. Instagram keeps no visible record either way, so nobody gets a notification when you reverse it.
Does hiding work for posts and reels too?
No. "Hide story from" covers stories and highlights only. A feed post or reel is visible to anyone who can see your profile, and Instagram offers no per-person exclusion for them. Your options there are narrower: archive the post so nobody sees it, restrict the person so their comments stay hidden, or block them outright. The gap catches people out — they hide their stories from an ex or a colleague, then post the same content to the grid and wonder how it was seen. If a piece of content is genuinely sensitive, the audience control has to happen before you post it, not after.
Is going private simpler?
Only if you want to exclude everyone who is not a follower. Private locks the whole account and forces approval on every new follow request; hiding is surgical and leaves your reach intact. The trade-offs are laid out in public vs private Instagram.
