Deleted posts, reels and IGTV videos sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days before removal, and deleted stories stay there for 24 hours. Restore them from Settings → Your activity → Recently deleted. Past those windows, nothing in the app brings them back.
The folder exists because deletion is so easy to do by accident, and most people never learn it is there until they need it.
Where is Recently Deleted?
- Open your profile and go to Settings and privacy.
- Tap Your activity.
- Choose Recently deleted.
- Select an item, then Restore. Instagram asks for a security check — a code to your email or phone — before restoring or permanently deleting.
That security check is deliberate: it stops someone with brief physical access to an unlocked phone from wiping your archive quietly.

Archive, delete or Recently Deleted?
People confuse three different things. Archiving hides a post from your profile while keeping it fully intact and restorable at any time, with no countdown. Deleting starts the 30-day clock. Recently Deleted is only the waiting room for the second one. If your goal is to take something off your grid without risk, archive it — the mechanics are in what happens when you archive a post.
What if the window has passed?
The app cannot help, and no third-party service can either — anything advertising "Instagram photo recovery" either wants your login or resells a data export you can request yourself. Two places are still worth checking. First, your phone's own storage: photos posted from the camera roll are usually still on the device or in its cloud backup, and your phone's own recently-deleted album has a separate 30-day window. What about drafts and unsent edits?
Drafts live outside this system entirely. A post you started and saved as a draft sits on the device that created it, not on Instagram's servers, so it does not appear in Recently Deleted and does not survive an app reinstall, a phone switch or a cache clear. The same applies to reel drafts, which are the ones people lose most often after an update. If a draft matters, export the finished file to your camera roll rather than leaving it in the app — a draft is the least durable thing Instagram stores on your behalf.
Can you recover someone else's deleted post?
No. Recently Deleted is private to the account owner, and a deleted post is gone from every public surface immediately — the folder is not visible to anyone else.
