Open the profile and look directly under the username: Instagram shows "Followed by" with up to 3 names and a count of the rest. Tap it for the full list of accounts that follow them and are followed by you. On private accounts the line still appears before you follow.
It is a small line of text that answers a large question — whether a stranger is connected to anyone you actually know. For anyone checking a seller, a match or a new follower, it is the cheapest signal available.
Where do you find mutual followers?
Under the username on the profile, above or below the bio depending on the layout. If you have connections in common the line reads "Followed by alice, bob and 12 others"; tapping it opens the complete list. If you have none, the line is simply absent, which is itself information about a stranger claiming to be a friend of a friend.
The same information appears in a second place: the "About this account" panel shows a followers-you-share entry alongside the join date and country. That version is useful because it sits next to the rest of the account's history — see what "About This Account" shows.
Does it work on private accounts?
Yes, and this is the useful part. A private profile hides its posts, its follower list and its following list from non-followers, but the mutual-followers line still shows. Does anyone know you checked?

The failure mode is treating a number as an endorsement. A scam account that follows 5,000 people in one city collects follow-backs quickly, and every one of them becomes a "mutual" for the next target. The signal is not the count — it is whether a specific person you would actually message is on the list.
Can you hide your own mutuals?
Not directly. The line is generated from public follow relationships, and there is no switch to suppress it. What changes it is the underlying data: going private restricts who can see your follower list in full, and removing a follower removes that connection from everyone's mutual line.
