"About This Account" is a panel on someone's profile showing when the account joined Instagram, what country it is based in, any former usernames, whether it runs ads, and any followers you share. It is Instagram's own transparency tool, and the single fastest way to sanity-check a stranger.
Most people never open it, which is a shame: it answers in 5 seconds the question that fake-account checklists take 5 minutes to work through.
How do you open it?
- Open the profile.
- Tap the three-dot menu at the top right.
- Choose About this account.
It is available on accounts with a substantial reach rather than on every profile, so a small personal account may not have the panel at all. That absence is not itself a red flag.
What does it actually show?

Why do former usernames matter most?
Because scam accounts are rarely built from scratch. The economical route is to buy an account that already has followers and history, rename it, and repurpose it. The former-username list exposes exactly that: a shop that was a fan page last month, or a "financial adviser" that has changed handle three times this year. Genuine businesses do rename themselves occasionally — once, from an obvious earlier version of the same name. Chains of unrelated names are the tell.
Does the account owner know you looked?

What does it not tell you?
Plenty. It gives no email, no phone number, no real name, and no location beyond a country. It cannot tell you whether the person behind a genuine-looking account is honest, only whether the account's history is consistent. What does the ads line tell you?
More than it looks. An account currently running ads is spending money to reach you, which is neutral for a real business and revealing for a "friend" who found you unprompted. Combined with a recent join date and a foreign country, a live ad budget is the standard profile of a paid-traffic scam: buy reach, catch replies, move the conversation to another app within two messages. None of it is proof on its own, but the three fields together are far stronger than any single one.
What does yours say?
Worth a look. Your own panel shows the same country and username history to anyone who opens it, which occasionally surprises people who changed handles after leaving a job or a relationship. You cannot hide the list, and it is one more reason to treat a username change as public information rather than a fresh start.
