Instagram shows part of the answer, and hides the rest by design. You can see who shared your Instagram post to a live story, but never who forwarded it in a DM. Tap the 3-dot menu on your post and pick View Story Reshares to see the public accounts that currently have your post in their story. The total share count in Insights will be higher, and the gap is made of DM forwards you cannot see.
Can you see exactly who shared your Instagram post?
Partly. Instagram names 1 category of sharer: public accounts whose story reshare of your post is still live. The rest sit behind a count. Instagram attributes no DM forward to anyone, and a story reshare drops off the list the moment that story expires 24 hours later.
Where is the View Story Reshares list?
Open your post, tap the 3 dots in the top-right corner, and look for View Story Reshares. The option appears only when at least 1 public account holds your post in a story reshare that has not expired. Private accounts that reshare you never appear in the list, whether or not you follow them.

Why is the share count higher than the reshare list?
The Insights share count includes every DM forward and every expired story reshare, while the list shows only live public stories. A post showing an Instagram share count of 80 with 8 accounts in View Story Reshares travelled through private messages roughly 72 times. DM forwarding is the dominant sharing behaviour on Instagram and none of it is attributable.

Why does the share count matter more than likes?
Shares carry more weight than likes in Instagram's ranking, because a share costs the sender something: a slot in their story or a message to a specific friend. A post with 40 likes and 30 shares is spreading; a post with 400 likes and 2 shares is being acknowledged and forgotten. Watching the Instagram share count over a month tells you which of your formats people pass on.
DM forwards count in full here, which is the practical reason not to grieve over the missing names. Instagram sees the forward, ranks the post accordingly, and shows you the total — you lose the identities, not the credit. How that ranking works in detail is in how the Instagram algorithm works.
Do you get a notification when someone shares your post?
Only when they tag you. A story reshare that includes your @username triggers a "mentioned you in their story" message in your DM inbox. Watching that inbox is the reliable way to catch reshares before they expire. A plain share with no tag produces no notification at all, so the count can climb overnight with nothing in your activity feed.
Can you stop people from resharing your posts?
Yes, with 1 toggle. In Settings and privacy, open the sharing and reuse controls and turn off Allow others to share your posts to their story. The option then disappears from your posts for everyone. The change is not retroactive: stories that already contain your post keep it until they expire.

Can you see who viewed your post instead?
