Work through 5 settings: disconnect "Activity off Meta technologies", restrict ad topics in Ad preferences, delete and disconnect synced contacts, revoke location and microphone permissions at the operating-system level, and clear your in-app activity. That cuts the off-platform data, though nothing stops Instagram measuring what you do inside the app.

Instagram's data comes from three streams: what you do in the app, what your device shares with it, and what other companies report back about you. Only the first is unavoidable.

What is "Activity off Meta technologies"?

It is the record of your behaviour on other companies' websites and apps, sent to Meta by those businesses through their advertising tools. In Accounts Center → Your information and permissions you can view it, disconnect the history from your account, and turn off future activity. Disconnecting does not stop the businesses sending it; it stops it being associated with your profile, which is the part that affects you.

What do the ad settings actually do?

SettingEffect
Ad topicsLimits certain categories — fewer ads on that theme, not fewer ads
Activity off MetaCuts off-platform behaviour from targeting
Data about you from partnersRestricts ads based on purchased data
Ads from advertisersHides specific advertisers you have interacted with

None of them reduces the number of ads. They change what the ads are based on, which is the honest framing Instagram itself avoids.

Read without being measured

A logged-out view generates no account-level signal — the Stelvo profile viewer needs no login.

Which device permissions matter most?

  1. Location: set to "While using" or "Never". Precise location adds nothing you need.
  2. Microphone and camera: allow only while using the app; revoke entirely if you never post.
  3. Contacts: revoke, then delete the uploaded contacts inside Instagram — revoking alone leaves the copy already sent.
  4. App tracking (iOS): refuse the cross-app tracking prompt, which cuts the identifier used to link you across apps.
  5. Photos: grant selected access rather than the full library.

What can you not turn off?

Everything Instagram observes directly: what you watch and for how long, what you search, whose profiles you open, what you like and save, when you are online. That is the product, and no setting disables it. What you can do is generate less of it — browse logged out when you only want to look, clear your activity periodically, and keep the search and watch history trimmed. The screens are in how to clear your search history.

See what they already have

Request your data export from Accounts Center. It arrives as files covering searches, watched content, ad interests inferred about you, devices, login history and contacts uploaded — usually more than people expect, and the fastest way to understand which of the settings above are worth changing. The process is in how to back up your Instagram.

Does it matter which browser you use?

Yes, more than most settings. Opening links inside Instagram's built-in browser keeps you in Meta's measurement context for whatever page you land on; opening the same link in a normal browser does not. Most phones let you change that default, and it is a one-time switch worth making. The same logic applies to logging in with Facebook or Instagram on third-party sites — each of those buttons is a deliberate connection between your account and a service that would otherwise know nothing about it.

The rest of the pass

Tracking is one half; visibility is the other. Once the data settings are done, work through who can see, find and message you in the 2026 privacy settings checklist, and lock the account itself down with two-factor authentication and session review.

FAQ

Does turning off ad topics reduce ads?

No. It changes their subject matter, not the number.

Does Instagram listen through the microphone?

No evidence supports it; the targeting comes from data you can see in your export.

Does disconnecting off-Meta activity delete it?

It disconnects the history from your account; businesses keep sending it.

Is a VPN enough?

No. You are logged in, so the account identifies you regardless of IP.

What is the single most effective step?

Disconnecting off-Meta activity and deleting synced contacts.
