Instagram ships a real button for this. To reset the Instagram algorithm, open Settings, go to Content preferences, and tap Reset suggested content. Explore, Reels and suggested posts go back to zero. Your followers, posts and DMs are untouched.
Where is the reset button?
Profile, then the menu at the top right, then Settings and privacy. Scroll to Content preferences and tap Reset suggested content. Instagram asks for a confirmation and the wipe takes effect immediately. The feature shipped in 2024 and reached most accounts through 2025, so an account that cannot find it is usually running an old app build.
What does the reset wipe?
Every behavioural signal behind recommendations: what you watched, lingered on, saved, searched and tapped. Instagram forgets its model of your interests and starts again. Accounts you follow, your own posts, your messages and your ad settings all survive — the reset touches the recommendation layer and nothing else.
| Reset | Untouched |
|---|---|
| Explore grid | Accounts you follow |
| Reels recommendations | Your posts and archive |
| Suggested posts in feed | DMs and message requests |
| Suggested accounts | Ad preferences and tracking |
Ad targeting is the thing people expect to change, and it does not — that lives in a separate system, described in how to stop Instagram tracking you.
What happens in the first hour after a reset?
A cold start. Instagram has no interest model left, so it shows broad, popular, slightly random content while it watches what you do. The first 5 posts you engage with carry disproportionate weight, because they are almost the only signal in the system. A reset followed by 10 minutes of the same content you were trying to escape rebuilds the old feed by evening.
How do you avoid rebuilding the same feed?
Treat the first day as training. Watch what you want more of to the end, tap Not interested on anything you do not, and search deliberately for 2 or 3 topics you care about. Dwell time counts even without a tap, so scrolling past slowly is a vote.
Unfollowing matters here too. Recommendations lean on your follow graph, so 30 accounts you never enjoy keep pulling the feed back — and nobody is notified when you go, per how to remove a follower without blocking.
Does Not Interested work on its own?
Yes, and it is the cheaper tool. Not interested on a post tells the ranking system to down-weight that topic and that account cluster without wiping 3 years of accurate signals. For a feed that is 80 percent right and 20 percent irritating, 20 taps of Not interested beat a full reset.
The mechanics of what feeds the ranking in the first place are in how the Instagram algorithm works.
How long does the feed take to settle?
Roughly 3 to 7 days of normal use. Instagram needs a few hundred signals before recommendations stop swinging, and a reset done on a Monday reads as chaotic until the weekend. Accounts that check in twice a day settle faster than accounts that scroll once a week, because the model is counting actions rather than days.
Expect 2 distinct phases. For the first day or so the feed is broad and generic. After that it narrows quickly, sometimes too quickly — 1 heavy session on a single topic can dominate the rebuild, which is worth knowing before you spend the evening on one rabbit hole.
Does a reset clear your search history too?
No. Search history is a separate store with its own control, and a recommendation reset leaves it in place. Clearing it is a different 4-tap job, described in how to clear your Instagram search history. Saved posts, close-friends lists and muted accounts also survive a reset untouched.
Does a reset affect who sees your posts?
No. Reset suggested content changes what Instagram shows you. Your own reach depends on your audience and your engagement, and it moves for entirely separate reasons — a drop after a reset is a coincidence, or it is the thing described in what is an Instagram shadowban.
Can you undo a reset?
No. The old signals are gone, and Instagram offers no restore. That is the real cost of the button: an account with a well-trained niche feed built over 2 years loses it in 1 tap. Try Not interested, a round of unfollowing and a few deliberate searches first, and keep the reset for a feed that is genuinely unusable.
