Instagram gives you 3 choices for story replies: everyone, people you follow, or nobody. To turn off Instagram story replies completely, open Settings, go to the Story section under privacy, and set Allow message replies to Off.
Where is the setting?
Settings and privacy, then Story under the sharing controls. The row reads Allow message replies with 3 options underneath. The change applies to every story from that moment, including ones already running, and nothing announces it to your viewers.
| Setting | Who can reply |
|---|---|
| Everyone | Any account that can see the story |
| People you follow | Only accounts you follow back |
| Off | Nobody |
What does People You Follow stop?
Spam, mostly. Strangers who find a public story through a hashtag or a location tag lose the reply box, while the people you chose to follow keep it. For a public account with 2000 followers and 40 mutuals, that setting removes the bulk of unwanted DMs without isolating you.
Do quick reactions still come through?
Yes, and this is the gap people miss. The emoji reaction bar is a separate mechanism from a written reply, and in most app versions it keeps working when replies are off. Reactions land in your inbox as a lightweight message, so switching replies off narrows the channel rather than sealing it.
Does turning replies off hide anything from viewers?
Nothing visible changes for them beyond the missing text box. Viewers still see the story, still appear in your viewer list, and still get no signal about why they cannot answer. The list itself is unaffected — it keeps recording every account that watched, per can people see if you view their story.
What if you only want to stop 1 person?
Hide your story from that account instead. Hiding is per-account, invisible to them, and leaves your settings alone for everyone else — the method is in how to hide your story from someone. Restrict is the other narrow tool: their replies go to requests and their comments stop showing publicly, with no notification either way.
For a person who keeps appearing where they are not wanted, the diagnosis comes first — see who is the unknown account watching your stories.
Are story replies private?
Yes. A story reply is a direct message and lands in your inbox, visible to you alone. Nothing about it appears under the story, and other viewers never learn that a reply happened. Replies to a story you posted to Close Friends behave identically, per what Close Friends is.
Does a private account still need this setting?
Often yes. A private account restricts replies to approved followers by definition, and an approved follower you would rather not hear from is exactly the common case. Turning replies off is a blunt but fast way to stop DMs from an audience you already vetted once and would rather not re-vet now.
Does the setting travel with highlights?
Yes. A story saved to a highlight keeps the reply rules that were in force when someone opens it, not the ones from the day you posted it. Switching replies off today closes the reply box on a highlight from March 2026 as well, which is the tidy way to shut down an old story that still collects DMs.
Views keep accumulating on highlights either way, and that list is a separate surface — see does Instagram tell who viewed your highlights.
Is there a way to allow replies from 1 group only?
Close Friends is the closest thing. Posting to Close Friends narrows both the audience and the reply pool to that list, without touching your global setting. For a story you want feedback on from 12 people, that beats switching the global control back and forth twice a day.
What reaches you when replies are off?
3 channels stay open unless you close them separately: ordinary DMs from people who can message you, message requests from strangers, and mentions of your account in someone else's story. Blocking shuts one person out of all of them, though it never deletes what was already said — see what happens to your DMs when you block someone. Turning off story replies is a narrow control, not a do-not-disturb switch.
Mentions are the one worth watching, since a mention puts your username in front of somebody else's audience without asking you first.
