Blocking freezes the conversation without deleting it. What happens to your DMs when you block someone is nothing: the thread stays put. The thread stays in both inboxes, every old message stays readable on both sides, and neither of you can send anything new. Nothing is wiped, which is the part people get wrong.

Does blocking delete the conversation?

No. The thread survives in your inbox and in theirs, with the full history intact. Blocking closes the channel: new messages cannot be sent in either direction, and the other person sees no error explaining why. What they see is a conversation that stops accepting messages.

What can the blocked person still read?

Everything you ever sent them in that thread, forever, unless you unsend it message by message. Photos and videos you sent are still in their copy. Anything they screenshotted or saved was never yours to recall in the first place, blocked or not.

Does Instagram tell them they were blocked?

No notification goes out. Discovery is by inference: your profile disappears from their search, your posts vanish from their feed, and the thread stops working. Most people work it out within days, which is covered in what happens when you block someone.

How do you remove the conversation for good?

2 separate actions, and only 1 of them touches their copy. Deleting the chat removes it from your inbox alone. Unsending each message removes it from both — tap and hold a message, then Unsend, and it disappears on their side as well. For a long thread that is a genuinely tedious job, with no bulk option as of September 2026.

Unsending leaves its own small trace in some app versions, discussed in can someone see if you unsend a message.

What happens if you unblock them later?

The thread returns to working order and every old message is still there. Unblocking does not re-follow: a block removes the follow in both directions, so you each start as strangers who happen to share a conversation history. Re-following a public account takes 1 tap; a private one means a fresh request.

Is restricting better for a messy conversation?

Often, yes. Restrict moves their messages into requests, hides their comments from everyone else, and sends no notification, while the person keeps seeing a normal profile. For someone you do not want to confront but do not want to hear from, restrict does the job with less drama — see what restricting does.

Muting is the softest version and touches only your own view, per how to mute someone without unfollowing.

Do group chats behave the same way?

No, and this surprises people. Blocking somebody does not remove either of you from a group you both belong to. Their messages keep appearing in that group for you, which means a block is not an exit from a shared thread — leaving the group is, per does Instagram notify when you leave a group chat.

How long does the history survive?

Indefinitely. Instagram publishes no expiry for DM threads, and messages from 2019 open as fast as messages from last week. A blocked thread is no different: the content sits on Instagram's servers until 1 of you unsends it, deletes the chat on your own side, or deletes the account.

Account deletion is the only action that clears your side wholesale, and after the 30-day grace window — the difference from deactivating is in deactivate vs delete. Even then, messages you sent remain in the other person's inbox, attributed to a name that no longer resolves.

Does blocking hide the past, or only the future?

Only the future, and that is the summary worth keeping. A block is a valve on new contact, not an eraser. 3 things stay exactly as they were: the messages already sent, the screenshots already taken, and anything reshared out of the conversation before the block.

What about message requests from a blocked account?

A blocked person cannot reach your requests folder, including through a group invite. What they can do is make a new account, which lands in requests like any stranger. Requests are a useful buffer for exactly this, and nothing in them is marked as read until you open it.

FAQ

Does blocking someone delete the conversation?

No. The thread stays in both inboxes with the full history readable.

Can a blocked person still read your old messages?

Yes, unless you unsend them one by one.

Does blocking remove you from a shared group chat?

No. You both stay in the group and their messages keep appearing there.

What happens if you unblock them?

The thread works again. The follow is not restored, so you each start as strangers.
