Restricting quietly quarantines one person: their comments on your posts are visible only to them until you approve each one, their messages move to your requests folder with no read receipts, and they are never told. They keep following you and can still see everything you post.
Restrict is the middle setting between doing nothing and blocking — built for the situations where cutting someone off would cause more trouble than the behaviour itself. A classmate, a colleague, a relative.
What actually changes
- Comments: anything they write on your posts is shown to them as normal and hidden from everyone else. You get an option to approve it, delete it, or leave it hidden.
- Messages: their DMs land in message requests. You can read them without the sender seeing a read receipt.
- Notifications: you stop being alerted about their activity.
- Their view of you: unchanged. Same posts, same stories, same follower relationship.
- Activity status: they cannot see when you were last active.

Check a profile without following it
Open a public account in the Stelvo profile viewer — no follow, no trace, no interaction.
How to restrict someone
- Open their profile and tap the three-dot menu → Restrict. Or swipe left on a chat in your inbox and choose Restrict. Or use the shortcut Instagram offers under a comment.
- Confirm. Nothing is sent to them.
- Undo the same way — the menu now reads Unrestrict.
Can they tell?
Not from a notification. What they can notice is indirect: their comment never gets replies, or a friend mentions not seeing it. Someone paying close attention can work it out. Someone casually scrolling will not.
When restrict is the right tool
Use it when the problem is public friction rather than access — a persistent commenter, a family member who argues under your photos, an ex-colleague you cannot block without an awkward conversation. When the person should not see your account at all, block instead. When you just want quiet, mute.
